Help Keep Dungeness River Wildlife Habitat Pristine
With no final permit yet issued to the County, on June 6th, the contractor for the Lower Dungeness levee road project commenced work--stockpiling materials, scraping down and re-grading the levee surface, and staging heavy equipment. It was the beginning of what could be a shocking transformation.
Work went on for nine days with no sediment or erosion control; vegetation was stripped from the levee sides, and gravel spilled into the restored wetland. The County, so eager in the past to express support for the restoration project, was silent.
Too little and too late, basic controls have now been installed. But where is the accountability for such disregard and neglect, and what further damage could be done while county commissioners and staff stand by?
This fight is not over.
Once again, we ask you take action to let the county know that we remain steadfast against paving of the levee and that the destruction now underway must stop.
